No because it takes time to learn the various instruments in the console. The person will have to study and get certification in order to work this machine. The job of a signaler is just as tough as the operator. This is because the individual has to be in full view at all times by the operator, watch the loading and unloading of the equipment and making sure no one is in the area. Can anyone become a signaler? Yes, as long as the individual gets the proper training to be able to guide the crane operator. There must only be signaler at a time on deck. This will avoid any confusion of who to follow at the site. Since most jobs are done on shifts, a certain color signifying who is in charge must be followed at all times. The operator is not allowed to do anything until the signaler shows up. What are some of the hand signals usually made to the operator? In order to hoist the load, the signaler will point the forefinger up and move the hand in small horizontal circles. To lower, the opposite is done with the forefinger pointed downward. To tell the operator to stop, the person will put the palms down with arms extended and hold this position until the command has been carried out. In the event that this has to be halted suddenly, the only difference is that the hand will move rigidly from right to left. If the crane has to be moved, the hand must be outstretched with the forefinger pointed in the desired direction. Signals such as these must according to the operator’s perception of what is left and right. When the load is heavy and it has to be moved slowly, the operator will to use both hands. One must be moving while the other is motionless. The signals mentioned are the ones commonly used in the job site. There are a lot more which the signaler has to know by heart because a mistake can cause delays in a project and thousands of dollars. A hand signal chart is usually placed on the crane. This will help people know the right one to give if ever the person forgot the proper gesture. If ever the person decides to find work elsewhere in the same position, it is best to check if these are the same or different than the one before. Safety is everyone’s concern from the simple construction worker to the foreman in charge of the work site. It is best for the operator and the signaler to work together using the proper crane safety hand signals in order to get the job done.
